Termite FAQ

What are termites?

Termites are a type of insect that feeds on wood and other plant material. They are a concern to homeowners because termites don’t distinguish between trees and the wood used to build homes. Termites are estimated to causes over $5 billion of damage to American homes every single year.

What are the different types of termites?

There are many species of termites, but here in San Diego we deal with two main types: Drywood termites and subterranean termites. Drywood termites build their nests within the wood that they are infesting, whether that is a fallen log in a forest, or furniture or structural wood in a home. Subterranean termites nest under the ground, and travel into homes along tunnels they build, commonly called “mud tubes.” Both types of termites can cause significant damage to a home in a surprisingly short period of time.

How can I prevent termites?

There are many things that homeowners can do to reduce the likelihood of a termite infestation in their property. The first thing to do is to make sure there is no wood sitting around the base of your house or against the walls, as they will attract termites. There should be at least an 18 inch gap between the soil and any wood portions of your home. Most importantly, homeowners should reduce moisture in their home as much as possible. Termites need moisture to thrive, so make sure your home’s structure is diverting moisture from your home’s foundation and reduce humidity indoors as much as possible with appropriate ventilation.

How can I tell if I have termites?

If you spot termites, then you know you have an infestation. However, it’s very common for homeowners to never actually see the termites themselves. If you suspect you may have termites, keep an eye open for termite mud tubes and termite “cement,” a substance they use to seal cracks in surfaces where they nest to keep the moisture in. If you find wood in an attic or crawlspace that looks like it may have been eaten, you likely have termites. If you find any of these signs, make sure you call us right away. Termites can cause an enormous amount of damage in a very short period, so time is of the essence.
